Help us to bring justice for animals

The SPCA justice fund raises money to bring animal offenders to justice. Unfortunately the SPCA sees numerous cases of animal neglect and abuse. One such recent case is the Bright Eyes (pictured) who was dumped in a severely emaciated dog in Manurewa on Friday 27 January.

Bright Eyes was dumped in a cardboard box at the end of a driveway in Alfriston Road, Manurewa. The owner of the property called the SPCA Auckland 24-hour animal rescue hotline at 2pm that day and SPCA Inspector Andre Williams attended the property immediately.

According to Williams, Bright Eyes was in such a severe state that she couldn’t stand, her bones were showing through the skin, her claws were seriously overgrown, and she was generally in a terrible state.

By donating to the Justice Fund, you are directly helping SPCA Auckland to bring animal offenders to justice.

What is The Justice Fund?

With the sad and ever increasing animal cruelty crimes we encounter, this task has never been more important. The maintenance of inspectors on the road in the vast city of Auckland, coupled with the costs associated with case preparation and execution of the judicial process, is immense.

Little income is generated from successful prosecutions and the Society receives no specific funding for its role in policing and prosecuting under the Animal Welfare Act. We need help to fight for the animals.

Help us raise money so we can bring animal offenders to justice. Many thanks for your support

SPCA Auckland Christmas Appeal

As Chief Inspector at SPCA Auckland I often see cases of serious animal abuse. I wanted to share with you Cassie’s story because she is a fighter. Her story has a truly horrible beginning, and I want to warn you that it is not easy to read. But together we can ensure that dogs like Cassie have a happy ending.

The Inspectorate Team received a call from a concerned member of the public about an extremely skinny dog living in a remote area. I was dispatched to the area and came upon a horrific sight. Cassie had been without food or water for quite some time; she was malnourished and dehydrated, and just 3 days from dying. She had been tied up and left to die.

I knew from the complaint that Cassie were in a serious condition, but I was still shocked by what I saw. It has been years since I have seen a case of neglect this serious. I immediately removed her from the property and brought her to the SPCA Auckland Animal Village for emergency medical treatment.

It was touch and go for those first few days. Often, in cases this serious, the animals don’t make it - too much damage has already been done. I’m just thankful we got there before it was too late.

Your donation ensures that my team and I can be out on the road 365 days a year, saving animals in need. Your support means that we can be the voice for animals in the Auckland region, and we can help put a stop to animal cruelty.

Just 21 days after arriving at the SPCA Auckland Animal Village, Cassie is like a different dog. I had to carry her in here that first day, she was so weak she could barely stand. Now she is out enjoying daily walks and running around in the local park. Often when a dog has been denied food for so long, they can develop serious trust issues and become extremely food aggressive. Thankfully this has not been the case.

Cassie is still recovering at foster care, but will be back in a few weeks for her final vet checks. Then she’ll be ready to find her new forever home.

With the help of supporters like you, more animals like Cassie will get a second chance at life. By donating today you will help to keep our inspectors on the road, provide medical care and shelter while they are injured, and it will help us demand justice when we pursue these cases through the courts. SPCA Auckland is taking action to prosecute Cassie’s owners, and expects the case to go to trial in 2012.

At the start of this I said that this story would be hard to read, but I hope you realise that while this story does have a sad beginning, together we can make sure it has a happy ending.

Warm wishes

Vicki Border
Chief Inspector

P.S. Please donate today so that during the busy summer season SPCA Auckland Inspectors can be out on the road everyday, rescuing animals like Cassie in need. We couldn’t do it without your support.
