Life’s pleasures
“Pleasure is central to animal existence … it adds intrinsic value to life.” SPCA Auckland Executive Director Bob Kerridge agrees wholeheartedly with this statement and concludes that the knowledge that such pleasures exist in the entire animal kingdom should influence the way humans treat animals.

A joyous affair
Auckland laid on a warm welcome for all those who attended the 22nd New Zealand Companion Animal Conference. People from around the world and from a wide range of animal welfare interests gathered to discuss the theme “The Joyous World of Animals”.

Strike out all abuse
Increasingly, animal abuse is being regarded as a red flag for family violence and/or child abuse, thanks in part to the First Strike campaign, introduced to New Zealand in 2002. We take an indepth look at this heart-rending problem and the state of the campaign.

New name, same battle
It was 2003 when a small group of Kaimanawa horse supporters decided they’d had enough of seeing horses being captured in an annual muster and being sent to the abattoirs and turned into pet food. They set to work to help the horses and we update their progress.

The animals go to church
Expect the unexpected is the best way to approach the annual SPCA Auckland Animal Blessing Service at St Matthew-In-The-City. The 2011 service was no exception as the animals, especially the canine clan, yowled and yipped to the hymns.

Correlation to kindness
New Zealand isn’t short of problems, comments SPCA Auckland Executive Director Bob Kerridge, but by heightening our sensitivities toward each other and stimulating our compassionate and generous natures, our animals make us a very rich nation indeed.

Elephants – the big issue
Auckland Council intends to spend millions of dollars on bringing two new elephants to the city’s zoo. We examine the matter and lots of other interesting things about these amazing animals.

The great animal audit
New Zealanders value their animals, particularly those who share their homes. This fact is clearly evident in the findings of a just-released survey commissioned by the New Zealand Companion Animal Council.

Magical monarchs
The monarch butterfly’s incredible migrations have been recognised as “an endangered biological phenomenon”. The monarch is a wonder of the natural world and we are fortunate to be blessed by its presence in New Zealand.

Help on hand
Birds, cats and horses in need of assistance get the benefit of three volunteer groups associated with SPCA Auckland. We meet stalwarts from each of the organisations – BirdWing, the Cat Coalition and Horse Welfare

  Rescuers in the rubble
In the days after the February 22 earthquake ravaged Christchurch, it was the rising human toll that occupied most people’s attention. But while rescue workers battled to save those trapped under the rubble, the fate of Christchurch’s missing and traumatised pets became the urgent focus of SPCA Canterbury.

The power of one
“We each have the power within us to achieve whatever it is we crave to achieve … it is the ‘power of one’,” Royal New Zealand SPCA National President Bob Kerridge told the Society’s annual conference in Wellington on May 7. It was a great conference with inspirational speakers and some very deserving award winners.

Poison and pets
Shadow didn’t eat his breakfast. Normally he would finish the cat’s breakfast, his own and then sit by the table waiting for any bits that might fall his way. Tyson had been vomiting, wasn’t interested in eating and was lethargic – totally different to his usual exuberant puppy self. We present two cautionary tales about poison and its effects on pets.

A fish called Meatball
In the latest of her popular columns, SPCA Auckland children’s animal ambassador Suzy Cato’s writes about a new member in her family – a pretty little goldfish who started life with the rather odd name of Meatball. And on the subject of goldfish, we have a tropical fish tank valued at $240 to give away, so be in to win.

Caring for ageing pets
It’s hard to believe that your companion animal will ever change, but inevitably he or she will one day join the older generation. In this special health feature you’ll discover that, just like humans, an older pet can experience things like heart disease, hearing or vision loss, arthritis, diabetes and incontinence. Learn how to care for your no-longer-so-playful pal.
